Also Featuring poster/print artist, AJ Masthay
With a mastery of both illustration and printmaking, artist AJ Masthay blends ancient techniques with modern vision to create truly unique and beautiful works of art. Priding himself on being as much of a craftsman as an artist, each step of his process is done by hand utilizing no digital instruments whatsoever. He believes by doing so, his works takes on a beauty and character that cannot be achieved through any other means. The vibrancy of color, the slightly embossed texture and the glasslike finish are just a few examples of why Masthay’s works are sought after by clients and collectors alike.

This month at the Peoples Art of Portland is a semi-annual show called “Outside The Box.” Artists are given the assignment (and wood) to create art that “escapes the frame,” making 3-D sculpture that hang on the wall. All the framing is constructed by Peoples Art co-owner/curator Jason Brown, through his framing business, PoBoy Art.
Artists are asked to “think outside the box,” as well as create work that “escapes the frame.” The show has always been a favorite at Peoples Art, and at its place of origin, PoBoy Art Framing Studio, where Brown and Haberman thought up the idea years ago. The format definitely gives the involved artists a new platform to make 3-D works. Some of the artists are sculptures, but most are painters working in a new form.
