This is a way to explain how and why I build these things.
My artistic intentions are inspired and motivated by my parents, neither of whom would consider themselves artists and are indeed very different from each other.
Quite obviously, I can attribute a portion of my own technical skill to my father, both a carpenter and a chemical engineer. This is evident in both the illustrative realism and physical construction in my work. Although, most would say I am more loose than my father, the perfectionist, his talents I emulate give me the ability to build these things.
I inherited something else from my mother: my ability to work creatively. My mother has shown me the power of a thing uniquely made by hand, its superiority over something mass-produced, its enhanced meaning. She has also shown me that there are voids everywhere for art to fill, that there is a lot of space out there for a creative improvement. I see this every holiday in an envelope stuffed with a collaged construction paper card. The Inside of the card is signed "Love, Mom" always followed by a drawing of a flower. This gives me the reason to build these things.
I currently live and work in Norhteast Portland.
