Extremo the Clown, also known as Scot Campbell, opened his artistic floodgates with “Weird, Wacky and Wonderful”, a one-person Exhibit at Basil Hallward Gallery in Portland Oregon. Other shows followed in short succession including “Extremoganza” a 3-day, 3 openings at 3 locations art extravaganza in Southern California. Since then Extremo has shown in galleries up and down the West Coast as well as in New York, Florida and Atlanta.
Extremo finds it peculiar that most professional fine artists create a body of work having a similar and cohesive style. Unlike those artists Extremo’s work is all over the place! Coming from a commercial art background he is comfortable working in an abundance of different mediums including acrylic, oil, bas relief and sculpture.
The style may not be cohesive but there is a vein that runs through all of his work: light and dark. Many Extremo pieces are bright, cheery, humorous, and cute. Just as many are dark, brooding and murky. A third layer is the combination of both light and dark where evil meets Bambi and materializes into an image of subtle tongue-in-cheek statements about life and philosophy. In his younger days Scot Campbell suffered from bouts of bi-polar disorder. His alter ego, Extremo, was born out of that and continues today. In addition to his fine art Extremo is best known for his outrageous art cars which have been featured on CNN, The Travel Channel, Discovery and ABC News.
My two biggest emotional needs are creativity and recognition. As you can imagine, being an artist and clown does the trick. When I say I am a clown I don’t mean a professional one, for me being a clown is a lifestyle, a way of being, and a way of doing my life. My art varies dramatically in technique and style. I just want to create and I don’t care how or in what medium! I want to make stuff, paint stuff, sculpt stuff. I also love designing and building art cars, singing, doing puppet shows, and making music. I will employ any medium or device that helps me to entertain you… whether you like it or not.
